George A. Bermann is the Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Law (a chair conferred by the Commission of the European Communities), as well as the Walter Gellhorn Professor of Law at Columbia Law School. He has been a member of the Columbia Law School faculty since 1975, teaching a range of subjects: initially heavily domestic (contracts and administrative law), but now for many years entirely comparative, international and transnational.
Robert H. Smit is an independent arbitrator in international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations seated around the world. Mr. Smit is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, where he teaches courses and seminars on international arbitration and transnational litigation. He a retired Litigation Partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, where he Co-Chaired the Firm’s International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Practice. Mr. Smit is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Review of International Arbitration; Member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration; and Adviser to the American Law Institute’s Restatement (Third) of the U.S. Law of International Arbitration. He is also former U.S. Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration; Chair of the New York City Bar Association’s International Commercial Disputes Committee; Chair of the CPR Arbitration Committee; and Vice-Chair of the IBA’s International Arbitration and ADR Committee.

Dr. Kabir Duggal serves as Senior Fellow and Advisor at Center for International Commercial and Investment Arbitration (CICIA) at Columbia Law School. He is a preeminent international arbitration and public international law practitioner. Recognized as a Chartered Arbitrator and Certified Mediator, he has served as arbitrator in over 75 complex investor–State and commercial disputes across multiple jurisdictions and industries, frequently acts as an expert on international arbitration and public international law matters, and has contributed to shaping global arbitration standards. He is also a Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia and Course Director for the Columbia Law School–CIArb Comprehensive Course on International Arbitration, with over 60 publications, multiple books—including Evidence in Investment Arbitration (Oxford), Principles of Evidence in Public International Law (Brill), and Pro-Arbitration Revisited (Juris)—and more than 500 speaking engagements worldwide. Dr. Duggal also advises the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States on the Investment Support Program, works with the Commercial Law Development Program initiatives, has conducted extensive global training for governments and institutions, and serves on numerous advisory and steering committees for international arbitration bodies. He is consistently ranked by Lexology, Chambers and Partners, Legal 500, and Lawdragon. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Hind Rattan (Jewel of India award), the Smit-Lowenfeld Prize, the “Champion for Change” Award by ArbitralWomen, Legal Era’s “40 under 40 Rising Star,” and the Dispute Resolution Practitioner of the Year—Americas and Global awards. A graduate with a doctoral degree from Harvard Law School (Albert S. Pergam Prize and the Harvard International Law Journal Prize), he also holds degrees from the University of Oxford (DHL–Times of India Scholar), New York University School of Law (Hauser Global Scholar), Leiden University (CEPANI Academic Prize), and the University of Mumbai (University Medal), and is admitted to practice in New York, the District of Columbia, England & Wales, and India.
